What becomes of the dead's gmail accounts

Following any legally dictated purge period, the account passes in encrypted form to the deceased's estate, or, in case of absence of descendants, to the federal or national government (depending on laws in effect for the country) of the deceased's most recent primary residence. There is no legal provision for the transfer of decryption credentials associated with this account, as these are not stored by the company and thus in the responsibility of the deceased to arrange for example in a last will and testament.
